Managing your ideas

by Sarah Stone

Identifying and marketing is an essential core competency for managing and sustaining a successful career and life. Empower and encourage yourself by knowing what you personally have to offer, what you want and how to get it. Don’t be afraid to push forward, to think beyond your current situation. Build a plan, start with your imagination, write it down. . . say it out loud, your ideas and thoughts all become reality when you take the first step forward.

You just need to decide, which ever day it is, that you are doing this. . . and there you go. You are on your way to change.

Think of your goal, draw a bridge to connect the steps and walk or run across it. I was once told by a dear friend. “What ever you want to do, you need to know where you want to end up…then you’ll know what you need to get there” (Thank you Iain) Upon hearing that, as simple as it was, it flipped a switch and I was on my way to making a change. I was on my way to making this dream of an idea (my business and my life) come true.

I started Illumination Advertising in July 2011, but the idea of it all had been there for much longer. Having been in the print, design and marketing business for over 15+ years at the time, I had managed to obtain knowledge and gain a firsthand perspective on the advertising industry. Yet I still wasn’t sure about going out alone. I thought, I waited, I pondered.  . I just wasn’t there, I wasn’t quite ready. . . it was always something holding me back. . I had encouragement from family and friends but I still waited. Then, a change happened and knew that was the day.  The day I would never work for anybody else in the same capacity ever again and that this was now my future.

I wanted  to build a business that had a personality & character, that reflected me or at least my good points, the things I wanted to share with the rest of the world. It was never about the largest pay check or the biggest and best, it is all small steps, each day is a major accomplishment. The lack of necessity for a 9 to 5 day makes everyday the equivalent of a weekend to me. I wake up happy, I build a day around the good things, I make time for walks and a coffee break. Between having reliable people on my team to pushing harder to make other people succeed, reaching at times hectic deadlines and being proud of what we do. It is all that matters. I wanted to create a positive and ethical business sense and environment for both employees and clients.

You just sometimes need a kick in the pants (or trousers) to make you get up and go, to change your thoughts and make them something you can hold on to. Regardless of how big or small the goal is, it really just needs to start one day at one point. Grab a pen and paper so you can make it personal. . make a list of what you want, what you would like to accomplish. Look at it, don’t over think it, don’t allow yourself to get too lazy or too caught up. Let it flow and one day, make it happen. Find your happiness.
