What Are #Hashtags ?
Curious about Hashtags?
I was recently explaining the world of #hashtags to a client and decided that others may have the same curiosity over what they actually are, when to use them and why bother. . .
#Hashtags; They are a way to share a conversation with otherwise strangers within the social media world. If you are posting something online (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest) you can include a hashtag (#) to your post which then links any and all conversations and images regarding the same subject together.
For example if somebody posted on Twitter “I just met with Sarah at Illumination Advertising, Now I have the best #MarketingTeam around. Amazing!” I can then go to the search bar (just like Facebook or Instagram has) and type in #MarketingTeam and I get page after page of results with the same tag.
You can make ANY tag you want, make it up as you go. However there are a few rules. No spaces. A space breaks the tag (up to that point) so #MarketingTeam written as #Marketing Team would really only be the term #Marketing since the space cut it off from the whole hashtag.
Even if your hashtag contains multiple words, group them all together. If you want to differentiate between words, use capitals instead such as (#MarketingTeam). Uppercase letters will not alter your search results, so searching for #MarketingTeam will yield the same exact results as searching #marketingteam
Numbers are just fine too, so tweeting about #WorldCup2014 is all good. However, . you can’t use all numbers only. Hashtags are not friendly to punctuation, so you can’t use commas, periods, exclamation points, question marks and apostrophes. Also any other special characters.
If you want to be part of a bigger picture, have clients involved in your business or event shared to the rest of the community or world, then often simplicity is good. For example, I have a client www.StPeteHistoryWalkingTours.com whom are new to the world of Hashtags. One specific use for them is to hand out a card post walk and let people know, “hey tag your images from the walk with a #” but there comes the dilemma. . . .what to use. Their website and name is long, so that might be too much to ask, #StPeteHistoryWalkingTour and using just a general #WalkingTour would also include other tours, and we don’t really want that. . . . so maybe something short and sweet #SPHWT would be good. Just a note. . . always check the hashtag isn’t being used elsewhere for something unrelated and something you don’t want to be associated with.

H.R. Giger – A Tribute
Hellish Hybrids and Biochemical Design
Hans Rudolf “Ruedi” Giger (//; 5 February 1940 – 12 May 2014) was a Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor and set designer. In honor of his passing, here is a short video representing some of H.R. Giger’s work. A uniquely creative artist and designer, sculptor and Academy Award winner. A talent and artist exponent of spectacular, often horrific, nightmare-esque art.
His work was always dynamic and deep, from his set of Tarot cards to the Aliens from the same titled movie. It’s Giger who is responsible for the look of the eponymous creature, all slimy sinew, acidic blood and double-jawed fangs.
Giger’s work explored the relationship between the human body and the machine, and he created surrealist images of humans fused with industrial parts, a style he described as “biomechanics”. Giger’s works, often showing macabre scenes of bodies fused into hellish hybrids, influenced a generation of movie directors, art students and inspired an enduring popularity for “biomechanical” art.
“My paintings seem to make the strongest impression on people who are, well, who are crazy. A good many people think as I do. If they like my work they are creative… or they are crazy,” Giger said in an 1979 interview with Starlog magazine.
He has been a favorite artist of mine for his willingness to dig deep into his imagination and show no fear of sharing what he found.
Giger was also known for his sculptures, paintings and furniture and many of these works are on display at his own museum in a medieval castle in Gruyeres, central Switzerland, which is run by his second wife Carmen Maria Scheifele Giger.
The museum, which opened in 1998 also houses Giger’s private art collection, including works by Salvador Dali.

Changes in Google AdWords – Mobile Devices
Earlier this month, Google unveiled the biggest changes to the AdWords platform over the last few years in a bold move to make AdWords work in the mobile world we all occupy and use. Designed to simplify campaign management across multiple devices, and to increase adoption rates of mobile advertising among small and medium sized businesses.
Google is highlighting three key features of enhanced campaigns:
- Simplified budget allocations: Manage bids across location, time of day, device type and more from a single campaign.
- Customized ad delivery based on where, when and how a user is searching: Show ads across devices with the right ad text, sitelink, app or extension, without having to edit each campaign for every possible combination of devices, location and time of day.
- New conversion types for more comprehensive reporting: Track multiple types of conversion including app downloads and calls from smartphones.
Here are 4 key mobile SEO trends to look out for, based on all of the new changes that are happening in the world of paid mobile search.
1. Local Organic Search is More Valuable than You Think.
One of the main drivers behind the recent redesign of AdWords was that it was getting difficult to measure the ROI of mobile search. For example, someone might:
