Everything we do in business today is digital — sending mail, signing contracts, attending meetings, even networking. The business card is one thing that digital will not fully replace anytime soon.
Two individuals with their heads buried in their phones typing away won’t create any kind of significant memory of the encounter. You can easily transfer the information from a business card to your mobile device after the conversation. When you meet someone that could potentially be a great prospect or connection, don’t you want him or her to walk away with a great first impression? A memorable business card does a lot more than just pass on an email address or phone number.
We offer a variety of print styles starting at $39 for UV coated Card-stock, we also offer textured card, trifecta pearl, triple layer and uncoated.
“How should my personal brand and company brand intersect online, if at all?”
Here’s what YEC community members had to say:
Branding Tips: Aligning Your Personal and Company Brands
1. You Are Your Business
“The founders of a startup are the startup. When you’re getting going and resources are limited, invest as much time as possible connecting your personal brand with your company’s brand. Introduce yourself to the world as part of your startup’s team, engage with your company’s fans and try to live the business. Putting a face to the business is beneficial for early adopters and press alike.” ~ Aaron Schwartz, Modify Watches
2. Use Thought Leadership to Connect the Two
“Publishing value-driven content is a great way to align your personal brand with your company brand. You can establish both you and your company as a thought leader, which is helpful for both sides. Post the articles on both your company and personal social media accounts to maximize the sharing potential of an article. Take advantage of speaking opportunities as well.” ~ Andrew Thomas, SkyBell Doorbell
3. Customers Just Want to See Consistency
“Whether or not your personal and company brands intersect online is dependent on the relationship they have outside of the public eye. If the brands never interact in any significant way on the back end, there is no reason to do so publicly. However, if your personal brand is closely tied to your company brand, then it is important that they send the same message. Consistency is everything.” ~ Rakia Reynolds, Skai Blue Media
4. It’s Different for Every Industry
“Being an industry leader means something different in every industry. It’s possible that having a bio page on your company’s website is plenty for your personal brand. However, in other industries (especially communications and marketing industries, where people are buying ideas and people), it’s helpful to work on boosting both your company AND yourself to build credibility as a leader.” ~ Brittany Hodak, ZinePak
5. Rely on the Perfect 160-Character Bio
“Write a 160-character bio that intersects your personal brand with your company brand (not the bio that says, ‘Tweets are my own and don’t represent the opinions of my employer.’) Mention the company you work for, and use that bio across your social media channels, personal website and thought leadership channels (Medium, Quora). A well-written bio naturally intersects the two brands.” ~ Brett Farmiloe, Markitors
6. Not Every Project Is You
“Personal branding can intersect powerfully with company branding, but not every project or product you launch needs that connection. Injecting your personal brand should be a goal when you’re dealing with projects you have a real passion for, the kinds of projects you consider to be your flagships. Overusing your personal brand on products that don’t have the right feel can dilute it.” ~ Matt Doyle, Excel Builders
7. Use Your Personal Brand to Drive Company Brand Awareness
“Your personal brand is an asset that will hold value, no matter what turns and paths your professional career takes. A strong personal brand can instantly create a strong company brand following when your audience is truly engaged. If someone is following your personal brand, they are going to immediately trust, be interested in and engage with the company you represent, present and future.” ~ Marc Lobliner, TigerFitness.com and MTS Nutrition
8. Use Social Media to Create a Streamlined Image
“I use my personal social media profiles to promote myself as the head of my company. I keep the focus of my personal posts work related, but not promotional. I also use my personal social media accounts to keep in touch with business colleagues by posting and commenting on their posts to maintain business relationships.” ~ Patrick Barnhill, Specialist ID, Inc.
9. Be as Human as Possible
“One of the key aspects of our company’s brand is simple: be human. Part of the humanity is demonstrating that we are simply an awesome company built by some even more awesome people. We encourage all of our employees to have strong personal brands both online and offline that just reinforces our core belief whether it is positioning themselves as thought leaders or just being themselves.” ~ Christopher Swenor, East Coast Product

Pinterest is a visual discovery tool that you can use to find ideas for all your life, business, style, school and more. Inspiration in picture form.
On a professional level I use Pinterest to share my creative work from graphic design, logo design, layout, photography and website designs, it is a simple way to post ideas and themes, color schemes, brands and identity.
On a personal level I can share who I am or what I like, I find these days I get most of my recipes from Pinterest, there is always a good recipe for something delicious looking from a smoothie to a cocktail, a quiche to a curry. Not only food matters which are close to my heart but sharing products I love, places I have been and yoga moves I have yet to attempt. It is a way to gather your life in pictures.
When it comes to the professional business side of Pinterest, People like to do business with other people they know, like and trust. Creating boards that show who you are is compelling. It offers a personal side to your business which is something I am all for, within reason. I am the person you are choosing to exchange money with, so why not know a little more of who I am?
Just like any social network, Pinterest is meant to be social. Social media gives you an opportunity to get in front of people you might not reach otherwise. You can connect, comment, like and re-pin just as you do on Facebook and Twitter. As you start doing this, you are putting yourself and your business in front of more people.
If you don’t have a Pinterest account, I suggest you take a closer look and start to share the good stuff.

I was recently explaining the world of #hashtags to a client and decided that others may have the same curiosity over what they actually are, when to use them and why bother. . .
#Hashtags; They are a way to share a conversation with otherwise strangers within the social media world. If you are posting something online (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest) you can include a hashtag (#) to your post which then links any and all conversations and images regarding the same subject together.
For example if somebody posted on Twitter “I just met with Sarah at Illumination Advertising, Now I have the best #MarketingTeam around. Amazing!” I can then go to the search bar (just like Facebook or Instagram has) and type in #MarketingTeam and I get page after page of results with the same tag.
You can make ANY tag you want, make it up as you go. However there are a few rules. No spaces. A space breaks the tag (up to that point) so #MarketingTeam written as #Marketing Team would really only be the term #Marketing since the space cut it off from the whole hashtag.
Even if your hashtag contains multiple words, group them all together. If you want to differentiate between words, use capitals instead such as (#MarketingTeam). Uppercase letters will not alter your search results, so searching for #MarketingTeam will yield the same exact results as searching #marketingteam
Numbers are just fine too, so tweeting about #WorldCup2014 is all good. However, . you can’t use all numbers only. Hashtags are not friendly to punctuation, so you can’t use commas, periods, exclamation points, question marks and apostrophes. Also any other special characters.
If you want to be part of a bigger picture, have clients involved in your business or event shared to the rest of the community or world, then often simplicity is good. For example, I have a client www.StPeteHistoryWalkingTours.com whom are new to the world of Hashtags. One specific use for them is to hand out a card post walk and let people know, “hey tag your images from the walk with a #” but there comes the dilemma. . . .what to use. Their website and name is long, so that might be too much to ask, #StPeteHistoryWalkingTour and using just a general #WalkingTour would also include other tours, and we don’t really want that. . . . so maybe something short and sweet #SPHWT would be good. Just a note. . . always check the hashtag isn’t being used elsewhere for something unrelated and something you don’t want to be associated with.
If you need any help with setting up your own marketing campaign or social media awareness. . . just let us know and we will be able to assist you achieve your new goals.

Identifying and marketing is an essential core competency for managing and sustaining a successful career and life. Empower and encourage yourself by knowing what you personally have to offer, what you want and how to get it. Don’t be afraid to push forward, to think beyond your current situation. Build a plan, start with your imagination, write it down. . . say it out loud, your ideas and thoughts all become reality when you take the first step forward.
You just need to decide, which ever day it is, that you are doing this. . . and there you go. You are on your way to change.
Think of your goal, draw a bridge to connect the steps and walk or run across it. I was once told by a dear friend. “What ever you want to do, you need to know where you want to end up…then you’ll know what you need to get there” (Thank you Iain) Upon hearing that, as simple as it was, it flipped a switch and I was on my way to making a change. I was on my way to making this dream of an idea (my business and my life) come true.
I started Illumination Advertising in July 2011, but the idea of it all had been there for much longer. Having been in the print, design and marketing business for over 15+ years at the time, I had managed to obtain knowledge and gain a firsthand perspective on the advertising industry. Yet I still wasn’t sure about going out alone. I thought, I waited, I pondered. . I just wasn’t there, I wasn’t quite ready. . . it was always something holding me back. . I had encouragement from family and friends but I still waited. Then, a change happened and knew that was the day. The day I would never work for anybody else in the same capacity ever again and that this was now my future.
I wanted to build a business that had a personality & character, that reflected me or at least my good points, the things I wanted to share with the rest of the world. It was never about the largest pay check or the biggest and best, it is all small steps, each day is a major accomplishment. The lack of necessity for a 9 to 5 day makes everyday the equivalent of a weekend to me. I wake up happy, I build a day around the good things, I make time for walks and a coffee break. Between having reliable people on my team to pushing harder to make other people succeed, reaching at times hectic deadlines and being proud of what we do. It is all that matters. I wanted to create a positive and ethical business sense and environment for both employees and clients.
You just sometimes need a kick in the pants (or trousers) to make you get up and go, to change your thoughts and make them something you can hold on to. Regardless of how big or small the goal is, it really just needs to start one day at one point. Grab a pen and paper so you can make it personal. . make a list of what you want, what you would like to accomplish. Look at it, don’t over think it, don’t allow yourself to get too lazy or too caught up. Let it flow and one day, make it happen. Find your happiness.
